Venus Flytrap- Dionaea muscipula 'boomans mutant'
Booman's Mutant is a unique flytrap that stands out for its striking seasonal transformations. Its traps are a vibrant shade of red and resemble those of the ‘Korean Melody Shark,’ featuring short to nearly absent marginal spines. However, unlike its counterpart, Booman's Mutant doesn’t grow as upright. The appearance of its trigger hairs is also quite distinctive; they often cluster near the edge of the trap or appear in unusually large numbers. In spring, the traps look almost standard but are slightly misshapen, with shorter-than-normal teeth. As the growing season progresses, these teeth diminish further, nearly disappearing by winter.
Chances are you’ve heard of this botanical wonder even if you are new to carnivorous plants. Native to the Carolinas, the Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) is easy to grow outdoors or in a sunny windowsill in most of the USA.
The Venus flytrap grows alongside other carnivores in boggy, open savannahs. For many years, misinformation spread that stated flytraps were hard to grow or required very stringent horticultural requirements. Fortunately, this couldn’t be farther from the truth! The Venus flytrap is a hardy plant, capable of being grown outdoors in nearly every state in the USA (some winter accommodation may be required for harsh northern winters and for desert summers). Our plants grow outside in the burning Texas sun year round and have even taken cold fronts down to 15 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter with no ill effects. See our Venus flytrap growing guide for more information.
